Hummel, Hummel (a term which is used here as a synonym for Hamburg) and Ahoy!

Gigantic container ships, historic sail boats, the traditional fish market or the Reeperbahn at night: A visit of the port and its surrounding culture belongs to the highlights of every journey to Hamburg. This city never sleeps between the fish market in the early hours of morning and the nightcap on the Reeperbahn in the evenings. We recommend several days to get to know the different facets of the lively port district.

  • Fish market »

If you have not visited the fish market yet, you have not seen the real Hamburg. Every Sunday morning between March and October food, flowers and arts are sold here, combined with raucous sailor tales. Please ask the reception for possibilities to enter the fish market from the waterfront arriving in a barge.

  • Landungsbrücken (landing bridges) »

In the early days the ships from overseas anchored here, today the barges depart from the landing bridges for their harbour trips. The next departure from one of the piers is often only half an hour away. Go on board and be astonished about the port as well as the scary and funny tales of the captains.

  • Historic warehouse district »

Coffee, tea, spices, carpets and other goods from colonies were stored in the red-brick buildings that are bordered by waterways. Today there are more and more tourist attractions in and around the historic buildings like the Miniatur-Wunderland with the biggest model railway of the world, an adventure coffee roasting-plant or the toy museum.

  • Modern Hafencity »

One of the present most impressing building projects of the city is coming to life in the Hafencity. On the premises of the former docks a completely new district is developing that combines living on the water, working, shopping, teaching and culture. Among tenements and office buildings, a university and the spectacular Elbphilharmonie (philharmonics at the river Elbe) is being built.

  • Reeperbahn »

For decades the Reeperbahn in the quarter St. Pauli is the epitome for night life and entertainment. The development of the district still goes on but the roots have never been forgotten. Next to long-established erotic bars, many young clubs, pubs and theatres can be found here.
